Backchat brings together new and existing work by Northeast Victorian artist Susie Losch, whose practice spans sculpture, installation and assemblage. Through casting and conjoining unexpected forms and objects, and influenced by the concept of play, Losch creates works infused with subtle humour and a materially rich sensibility.

The works in Backchat are grounded in the usage of surplus, that often occurs unintentionally through production, experimentation, retrofitting, and the packaging of goods. Discarded building materials are assembled into lively sculptural forms spanning wall and floor, while concertina and moulded cardboard cylinders are reimagined as wall-based sculptures. Locally sourced mill waste fabric becomes inflatable tetrapods, breathing and deflating akin to the waves that break upon these concrete blocks used on coastlines around the globe.

Repetition functions as both a conceptual and visual strategy, creating rhythms and patterns. Each of Losch’s works ‘talk back’ and to each other, with serious yet playful concern.
