Sunshine and Shadows presents new work by Albury based artist Donna Caffrey who works across textile and collage. Inspired by the critically endangered Golden Sun Moth and the Bogong moth, Caffrey’s new collages and works on paper consider the surprising diversity of moth life and other vulnerable species in Northeast Victoria and the Murray region of New South Wales.
Unlike most other moths, the Golden Sun Moth is only active during the brightest parts of the day. With its pretty smattering of bright orange spots and deceiving daytime activity, it is often mistaken for a butterfly. The Bogong moth is nocturnal and lives in the shadows.
Starting with the central motif of the moth and adding repeated insect forms, Caffrey builds tension and drama through layering and texture, drawing attention to the plight of some of Victoria’s rarest and vulnerable insects.
