Drawn with Paint brings together a selection of work by Wangaratta based artist Pamela Florance made over the past two decades of her 50-year practice. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas or paper, Florance describes her work as drawing with paint – a process of mark making using wrist and hand movements to capture the beauty in the everyday.

Grounded in her experience in portraiture and still life, scenes gathered from her surroundings and home, Florance has in later years felt the pull of abstraction and the mark making possibilities that it presents. Beyond the gestural possibilities, abstraction’s relationship with colour offers Florance a powerful, emotive tool.

Running through this series of works is a fascination with the colour Payne’s grey - a dark blue grey with hints of burnt sienna. This cool yet rich grey offers Florance a method of balancing both energy and form whether that be in representation or perception and bringing other colours to life.
