Saturday 17 - Sunday 25 January 2026, 10am - 2pm

Take a creative break from the summer heat in our newly airconditioned Gallery 2 and make art as a family. Try your hand at drawing one of our still life arrangements or select an activity from the large range of NGV Kids on Tour worksheets to complete. Take your artwork home or pin it up on the three walls in the gallery space for others to enjoy.

Summer Shapes and Shadows

This still life art activity involves drawing things that don't move, like fruit, flowers, or everyday objects. It is a way that we can learn to observe and draw the shapes, colours, and textures of these items, practicing skills like creating highlights and shadows to make drawings more realistic.

Look at the objects in the still life arrangements on the table and think about the basic shapes and colours. Start by drawing the main shapes, such as circle, square or rectangle that you see. Once the outlines are complete, colour in the drawings using textas or coloured pencils.

As a challenge experiment by drawing the same still life from different angles, or by using different colours to represent the objects.

FREE. Drop in anytime between 10am – 2pm during gallery opening hours, Tuesday – Sunday. No experience necessary and all materials provided.
